our story

Old fashioned values, efficient service

The Story of iDL Transport

Canterbury’s Preferred Refrigerated Freight Provider

Old-fashioned values and efficient service

iDL was originally established in 1989.  It was bought by Ross and Judith Edgar in 1999 and run as a small family business. The business was bought as an investment to keep busy while their newly established vineyard matured. They started with just 2 trucks and a service area extending up to Christchurch and down to Timaru. It did not take long for the local community to align themselves with the good old-fashioned values and efficient service offered from the Edgars.

More Trucks, Less Wine

In just a few years’ time, the service area had extended to the greater Canterbury region and iDL had become a firm favourite in the meat and food transport industry. Bigger premises in town accommodated what had now become a fleet of 6 iconic blue and white trucks and before they knew it, the vineyard was sold so that they could focus solely on the exciting new opportunities that iDL was presenting.

iDL Today

Today the Edgar family still run and manage the business and continue to be an integral part of the team. They now have over 30 trucks and a large team of permanent and casual staff, many of whom are long serving, with many years’ experience in the transport industry and contribute to the hard-working culture of the family business.
